Safety Week 2023 - Day 4

Strong Voices, Safe Choices

Day 4 started by Kat Bighinatti, with WTJV safety, presenting on an important topic that is not often talked about in the construction industry. She discussed mental health awareness and provided resources for anybody struggling with depression or anxiety. Did you know that the construction industry has higher rates of suicide than work-related fatalities? It is important to talk about these facts and address them head on. Hopefully her talk encouraged everybody to look after each other and ask the hard questions if somebody seems off.

The safety demonstration was presented by Luke Price, with Art's Rental. He talked about blind spots with various pieces of equipment. Due to struck-by being one of OSHA's fatal four (1. falls 2. struck-by 3. electrocution 4. caught in between) working around equipment is a perfect safety topic at this point in the project. The attendees were given the opportunity to sit in a skid steer, excavator, and bulldozer to experience the operator's view.

Food was provided by Six Forks Burger Company (spaghetti and meatballs), Celtic Pig (pulled pork and cheeseburgers), and Spinellis Pizza.
